27/12/07 - The next day Jeremy and I left Kat's place very early in the morning, because we had to get to the White Island, which is about 2 hours away from or 50km off Whakatane. It is also known under the name Whakaari. The special thing about this small island is that it is actually New Zealand's most active volcano. Our trip to Whakaari included a guided walking tour around the island. We had to wear helmets and gas masks - awesome! You know how much I love hats ;-)

And yes... I took a little sip of this 'water'... strange taste... traces of iron...

Tauranga - Ohope/ Whakatane

After the mud pools Karrie-Ann took a flight back to Wellington and I headed towards Tauranga where I met Jeremy, LeRoy and TJ again.
Tauranga is known for its little mountain called Mt Manganui. Sorry, but I have to say that compared to other NZ mountains this one looks like a hill. I still wonder why they make such a fuss about it... Anyway... we took a walk around it...

And went for a swim on the beach in Papamoa...

After I got to know more members of Jeremy’s family we had a yummy dinner and went on to Ohope where we spent the night at Kat’s place...a friend of mine from Wellington. Thank’s a lot Kat! The view across the sea to White Island was splendid!

Rotorua and the Mud Pools

On the 26th of December, called Boxing Day… With other words a mad big sales day… people recovering from theirs hangovers… I travelled in convoy to a place near Rotorua, where I wanted to meet up with my flatmate Karrie-Ann. We were totally in the middle of nowhere, not even my New Zealand company had been there before… No wonder, that I can’t remember the name of the place. Anyway, it was beautiful. I was heartily welcomed by Karrie-Ann’s family at her grandparents’ farm. Their first comment was that they had been waiting for me all day long, because I should be the photographer for their family portrait. So, minutes later I found myself in the position of coordinating this huge family so that I got all of them in one picture. And I can tell you that was not easy… and I was still so fascinated by the scenic surroundings.

After the photo session, we went with Karrie-Ann’s father on an off road-trip with their jeep. That was fun! We were driving up hills that were deceptively steep; I did not want to believe that it was possible to go up there by car. The guys with the jeep behind us had to leave their vehicle behind. It could not get up the hill. Unfortunately, not even we could make it up the steepest hill, so we walked up the last few meters, from where we unwound and enjoyed a superb view of the surrounding countryside. Ahhh, did I tell you that when I had gone to the craters of the moon two days before that, that I had been confronted with problems with my camera… The screen did not work anymore. Nevertheless, I kept on trying to take pictures… That’s the reason why some of them are a little bit uncoordinated.

In the evening we went to Rotorua, where Karrie-Ann’s parents live... a very pretty neighbourhood with innumerable mansions. We ended the day with having a yummy dinner, watching “Pirates of the Caribbean” and having a bath in their own spa pool--- luxury! By the way… for all those Rotorua enemies: It does not smell like rotten eggs everywhere in Rotorua. Nonono!!

The next morning Karrie-Ann and I got up early and went to the mud pools. It is always good to have a local with you, because locals get in for half the price. And with Karrie-Ann’s company the same was valid for me. J
Besides, never go to the mud pools situated in town, always go to the ones that are 10 kilometres away from Rotorua. First, the entrance is cheaper; second, you see more and third, there’s a fabulous geyser to admire as well.

But instead I got a nasty sunburn. It is definitely no fun to go outside without any sunscreen on. Never do that! You will regret it! Only 10 minutes later you will be bright pink and sore. And that hurts terribly!
After the Tongariro Crossing I was absolutely exhausted. However, I could not go to bed directly- first I had to find my pyjamas – That was the only thing I had left in the backpackers. Come on- who’s going to steal my pyjamas?!! Finally, I found them in the washing machine of the backpackers. I relaxed in the hot spa pool as compensation. Nice- but a little bit dangerous when you are extremely tired.
Anyway, the next day, on the 24th of December I headed towards Taupo. On my way over there I had a look at a few touristy spots.

Instead of celebrating Christmas Eve at home, we went out dancing and shared drinking customaries. The next morning the distribution of presents took place. And again we had Eggs Benedict und lots of Ham and Bacon. Later in the day we met up with a few other families and had a spontaneous lawn ball competition. Actually I forgot who the winner in the end was, but it was lots of fun.

Tongariro Crossing

The next day I got up early to catch the bus shuttle to the Tongariro Crossing. On my way over there I could see the summit of Mt Ruapehu. Minutes later the peak was covered by clouds. Nevertheless the view of Mt Ngauruhoe and Mt Tongariro was breathtaking.
When I managed the first steep part of the walk I met a German. After a small talk we realised that we had more than just the same backpack in common, we were both walking alone… so we decided to join each other for the rest of the Crossing. Actually that was a very good idea, because I was a little bit worried about my knee. Nearly one year ago, I got terrible problems with my knee. Now, I am not able to run anymore, although running was and is my great passion. I hope, one day I will be in shape again for a marathon. I still hope to find a competent doctor, when I am back in Germany. My gosh!!! I am only 21 years old! So in case, somebody who can recommend a qualified doctor reads this, tell me!!!! I will be more than grateful!
Most of the walk I managed without any pain, but the last two hours I had to wear my uncomfortable and mostly useless bandage. I could not really enjoy it. I can tell you… I learnt to love climbing uphill more than walking or running downhill, because I know I won’t have any problems with my knee on the way to the top.
Nevertheless the view of the mountains and all the other natural wonders more than compensate for the pain associated with it.
Just to give you a gist of what this Great Walk is like, here a few sentences out of my tourist guide:
“Reputedly the best one-day walk in New Zealand. The walk traverses spectacular volcanic geography, from an active crater to steaming vents. And the views ain’t bad either. It covers the most spectacular features of the Tongariro Northern Circuit between the Mangatepopo and Ketetahi Huts…The track passes through vegetation zones ranging from alpine scrub and tussock, to places of higher altitude where there is no vegetation at all, to the lush podocarp forest as you descend from Ketetahi Hut towards the end of the track.” (Lonely Planet – New Zealand; p. 315-316)

Additionally I did a side trip from the main track to the summit of Mt Tongariro. From there we had a stunning view of Mt Ngaurahue. But as soon as we got back onto the main track a cloud came quickly and the summit of Mt Tongariro was gone. We can be so happy, that we had been there in the right time.

This walk is definitely a special one. You obtain the impression being on another planet. Marvellous! And it is definitely worth a journey for all Lord of the Ring fans.

It was a disastrous first day...

On the 22nd of December I wanted to start with my travels on the North Island. I calculated three weeks time to explore everything. People who are acquainted with me know that whenever I am going on travels or similar things I first have a shower and start to pack afterwards – that’s my ritual. By the way, I have been living out of a suitcase for the last 4 years… so I really know what I am talking about. But on this very morning nothing worked the way I had planned it.
I got up at 5:00am and was just about to have a shower. However, and that is the way it all started: There was no water in our flat!!! Ok, I thought. Don’t worry. It might be only temporary. So I started to pack my stuff first. I was supposed to move out of this room on that day as well. Every 10 minutes I checked if we had any water again… but nothing… the pipes were bone dry. At half past seven I got extremely impatient. I planned to pick up the rental car around 9:00am. So I called Jeremy and asked if I could have a shower at his place. Minutes later he came around picked me up and brought me to his place. After I was ready we went to the rental car office by bus. And there the next stupid thing happened. I realised that in all the morning hectic I had exchanged my bags, so I did not have my driver’s licence with me, but my toothbrush… Yes, unbelievable, but nevertheless absolutely typical. Bad things never come alone, at least in three. Fortunately, I was accompanied by Jeremy, so we used his driver’s licence to pick up the car. Then we went to town to handle another typically stupid thing. The day before I had brought back all the books I had borrowed from the library. But when I came home that evening I realised that I had forgotten one single book!! ARRRGH!! So, I had to go there that morning again. Afterwards, I picked up the trousers I had brought to the tailor the day before. Then I posted a letter for my little goddaughter Rafaela… sorry that it took me such a long time to reply, but I have heard you were so delighted about it that you jumped into the air happily – That’s the reaction I had expected!
But this was not all yet. I could not find my camera. The day before, I had used it in the Early Years Centre, so I guessed that it was still there. Luckily I was in the possession of the key for the building. So we had to get there und yeah, I found my camera at once! Puhhh!
After all this stress, Jeremy invited me for breakfast – Eggs Benedict – yumyumyum!
When we were finished with loading my entire luggage in the car, Jeremy already gave me my Christmas present. You know those cassettes you put in your car radio with a wire connection for your MP3-player. I am sure there’s an expression for it, however, I can’t think of it now. Anyhow, so I was able to listen to my music during my travels. Thanks Jeremy! That was a very good idea, since the radio reception here in New Zealand can be absolutely miserable.
After we went to the Car Rental office again to show my driver’s licence I was ready to head off, to leave Wellington for the first time after 3 ½ months. I was absolutely excited, but admittedly tired as well. Actually I intended to leave Wellington around 11:00am, but at this time it was already 2:00pm. So Jeremy did me another favour. He drove with his car in front of me out of Wellington, so I just had to follow him without concentrating on any signs… Thanks! But nevertheless I still had a long drive ahead. After saying good bye to Jeremy the bad luck came back… I was stuck in a traffic jam!!!!! Yes a traffic jam! Here in New Zealand on a Saturday afternoon, heading north!! My gosh! And that for 2 hours! Ah, by the way, driving on the left hand side is no big deal. But attention: “Always account for the stupidity or ignorance of other people!”
Finally around 4:00pm I was free and made all way up to the Tongarriro National Park Village. I arrived there between 7:00 and 8:00pm. I can tell you, whenever you get the opportunity to fill up your car with petrol here in New Zealand, do it! It’s amazing-sometimes you can drive for hours, and there’s nothing, no civilization, no petrol stations – Wow! Some people experience that as a little bit spooky, other ones hugely enjoy it! I had mixed feelings. I enjoyed the landscape but felt a little bit lost sometimes. Nevertheless, I reached my aim and stayed with French, Brazilian, Kiwi and German people in a lovely backpackers.

Mayday, mayday!!! Yvonne, where are you?!?

Well, I know you have not heard from me for a long time. The last four months passed quickly… and I was terribly busy. I have been travelling around for the last seven weeks. But before that I had worked fulltime at the Early Years Childhood centre. I had so much fun together with those little rascals. I took them to my heart. When I visited the centre this week I was emotionally touched. I did not expect I would react with tears in my eyes. I love them all! Besides I wrote research papers for university, moved to a new flat, which is just behind the Basin Reserve. I enjoyed spending my time over there watching cricket games. It is actually my favourite spot here in Wellington. I had lots of fun with my new friends while having potluck dinners and going out. I went to a soccer game in the Westpac Stadium (Wellington Phoenix FC vs. Central Coast Mariners FC- and no, I did not see David Beckham playing)

and attended life drawing classes, what I still do. I went to art exhibitions (Spatial Design, Piranesi and Pat Cush & Roger Morris – letzteren kenne ich persönlich – ist schon ein schönes Gefühl zu einer Kunst Vernissage zu kommen und vom Künstler mit Namen persönlich angesprochen zu werden). I watched amazing fireworks at the harbour water front on Guy Fawkes Day. I met Susanne again (refer to Able Tasman Coast Track), went to the Early Years staff party and Farewell Dinner of my workmates.

Got a new haircut. Around Christmas time I enjoyed “the Advents Calendar” Anika had sent me from home. Thank you my love. Actually, I still enjoy it...ups it’s already February!

Silverchair & Powderfinger & Autozamm

On the 18th of October there were Silverchair and Powderfinger playing in the TSB Bank arena. Julia and I had been given free tickets from a friend who has got connections and due to the fact that we used to work there we knew how to sneak into the hall without standing in the endless queue in front of it. Though, we were a kind of unexpected fans. When I saw the door with a sign on it, saying “Dressing room – Autozamm” I did not hesitate; without thinking about it I just popped in there and had a brief chat with the band. Minutes later, we watched them playing on stage just a few meters away from us. And they were amazing!

Powderfinger was next and absolutely good.

And finally, Silverchair performed their show. And wow, I have to admit the singer is stunningly beautiful…

After the concert Julia and I were quite hopeful of meeting one of the bands and just an instant later our wish came true. Autozamm was coming towards us. At once, I asked them cheekily if they were going out…and yes. They even asked us if we wanted to come with them…

After a little while we sat all together in a bar on Cuba Street, drinking wine until late at night. And guess who we met outside, when we had to leave the bar! The singer of Powderfinger… Unfortunately, he ran away after I had taken a picture of him… SOWAS ABER AUCH tstststssss…

Seatoun to Lyallbay

Once, on an early Sunday morning I was woken up nicely by a phone call. After a wonderful talk to Andi I decided to use this perfect weather and go for a walk. First I took a bus to Seatoun a completely different part of Wellington. As the name already reveals, it is situated directly by the sea. And I was totally astonished. I did not know that Wellington can be so beautiful. Wow!!

I went all the way from Seatoun to Lyallbay. While taking photos it took me about 3 hours to get to the airport. Directly at the beginning I met a woman from the South Island (Invercagill)…after a little conversation addresses and phone numbers were exchanged. It’s unbelievable how fast you can get in contact with the people over here.

There is not so much to report about. You can not use words to describe how beautiful it was…but therefore I have taken all those pictures. I hope you can get an impression!

As usual I had problems with the wind…

My New Job - Early Childhood Care

At the end of September I got another job. Now, I am working in an Early Childhood Centre. It’s like a Kindergarten. I have to look after one to four year olds. Basically, I play with children all day long. It’s so much fun! Fatimai and me!

Staff Party

On the 6th of October, there was the staff party of the RA-Company. The motto was Rock Star. As real rock stars have tattoos, Julia and I drew our own ones…Faked tattoos. I wanted to have something unusual. Amongst others, I decided to have the writing ‘Deutsche Markenbutter’ on my forearm. Very original, isn’t it?!

The reactions were really funny, when the founder of the RA-Company, who is Austrian, and the chef, who’s German, read it. They started laughing and called us “CRAZY GERMAN GIRLS!!!”

After we had a few drinks and lots to eat the complete staff danced wildly down the street to the next bar and kept on celebrating all night long. I had a most enjoyable night!

Jaggedy Ann

At the beginning of September, there was a little rock concert at ‘Bodega’, a club just around the corner of our accommodation.

All together there were 6 different bands playing their songs. I was absolutely amazed by Jaggedy Ann and another group whose name I can’t remember. What a shame! Anyway, the band consisted of three boys and a female singer. Her booming singing voice reminded me of The Guano Apes. When you listen to this group for the first time you can’t really say if a man or a woman is singing. Here it was quite the same. Absolutely amazing!

Jaggedy Ann was the last group and it was the best. Four good looking girls rocking the house! They are big fans of AC/DC… you can hear it in their songs. If you want to listen to a few songs of them, have a look at their ‘my space page’. I can highly recommend it!

Volcano erupts

Actually I wanted to write this comment two weeks ago…but well, there was so much to do…But it’s never too late.

Two weeks ago, not far away from me, a natural disaster struck. Mount Ruapehu, situated in the middle of the North Island, suddenly erupted.

Uiuiui after a while it becomes a little uncomfortable here.

WELLINGTON (AFP) - Ski lodges were evacuated, highways briefly shut down and one man was hurt when a volcano in New Zealand erupted unexpectedly, spewing ash and rocks into the air, officials said Wednesday.

The eruption at Mount Ruapehu, located halfway between Wellington and Auckland on New Zealand's North Island, started at 8:20 pm Tuesday (0820 GMT) and lasted for seven minutes, GNS Science duty vulcanologist Craig Miller said.

"It was just straight out of the blue," Miller told Radio New Zealand.

No further activity was reported in the hours following the eruption but it remained unclear whether any further eruptions could occur, he added.

"It's certainly not escalating into anything bigger at this stage," he said.

A 22-year-old climber, who was not named, was hurt when rocks crashed through the roof of a mountainside hut where he was staying, pinning him to the floor. He was evacuated by helicopter early Wednesday, officials said.

The eruption also briefly forced the suspension of train service along the main line in the area and the evacuation of several ski lodges in the popular resort area.

Two trails of volcanic ash and water from Mount Ruapehu's crater lake flowed down the sides of the mountain, but no significant damage was reported.

Crazy New Zealand chicks

In one of my comments I wrote that sometimes New Zealand people dress slightly crazy. A few weeks ago, I met 10 crazy Kiwi girls while I was shopping in a supermarket. I do not know if there was a special reason for their dressing up, but they told me that they did it regularly and went from one supermarket to the other. Just for fun!

It reminds me a little bit of the “Lumpenball” or “Nachthemdenball” in my home village, Kappeln. Gelle?

Wharariki Beach, Farewell Spit, Collingwood, Devil’s Boots, Nelson – back to Wellington

The next day was the most beautiful day of our trip. We moved to the west coast of the South island, to Wharariki Beach. It is an isolated beach. We had to walk 20 minutes from the car park over farmland to the beach. On our way, I saw this unbeatable strange combination of palms and sheep again…and this time I grasped the opportunity and took a photo…to show you how bizarre it looks.

Also have a look at the gnarled trees in the next picture. They also look pretty abnormal, as the wind had influenced the shape of the trees.

But not only the trees looked strange…When we reached the beach we noticed that it was covered by unusual and fantastic dune formations. I felt like destroying work of art by walking over it. The rough sea looked really dangerous and it surely was. You could here the booming sound of the sea with its breaking waves. I was deeply impressed. I loved it.

Unfortunately my camera memory card could not save any more pictures. And after I deleted a few pictures even my batteries ran down…so I could not take anymore pictures. Bad luck! That is the reason why all the following pictures are either taken by Susanne or Gregor.

Besides, on our way to the beach we passed a little creek, where around 6 seals were playing in the water. Watching them was highly entertaining.

When we went back to the car we made a short detour to a light house. From there we got a noramic view of the Farewell Spit. It is a 24 km beach. Can you see it on the picture?

Our next aim was Collingwood. All day we were looking forward to this town…because of chocolate. Unfortunately the Rosy Glow Chocolate House was closed and will not be reopened till 1^st October. My guide book says chocoholics would go nuts here, where handmade chocolates were lovingly produced. In my case however, I went nuts because it was closed. How could you do that to me?! That was evil!

Before we went back to Nelson we stopped at a long beach to take a few more pictures…Due to the fact that my camera’s batteries had gone dead, I started to collect shells instead…and I can tell you, I could not stop. I have no idea how to carry everything home to Germany.

Around seven o’clock in the evening we arrived in Nelson. There, I had to say goodbye to Gregor and Susanne… unfortunately. I had a great time with you guys!

I spend the following evening with my workmate Amy and her lovely family. We had a great dinner, watched a very old movie (TOM with Mel Gibson) and played a special game to enlarge my knowledge of vocabulary. Next day was Father’s Day. While Amy’s mother was in church we went for a bush walk up to the Centrum of New Zealand, where we had a wonderful view over Nelson.

Lonely Planet says that Nelson had got more sunshine than any other part of NZ. And I have to agree! Punctual to the beginning of spring it was sunny and hot. I had worn a T-shirt for the first time here in New Zealand.

Afterwards we met up with her mother and had dinner in a restaurant.

Shortly before my departure back to Wellington I got along to the eye-popping World of WearableArt and Collectable cars museum. Some dresses or do I have to say costumes…were very funny and extravagant, but I expected more. There were only three rooms to visit.

At the moment there is the WOW Show in Wellington and I have been working there a few times …I could not see so much so far, but I think it is grossly overestimated.

Sea Kayaking and Takaka

The day after we came back from our tramp we did sea kayaking, which was a lot of fun! But before that I was given a highly professional outfit. I loved it! A kind of diving suit! That is something I always wanted to put on sometime. (ist das richtig? …was ich schon immer einmal anziehen wollte….soll es heißen!) Just the very feeling! Cool!

It was very difficult to put it on…but it was even more difficult to take it off again.

But actually, my cap was the greatest hit! It let me look at least ten years younger. Even if I had been miles away, you could have recognized me. I looked extremely striking! A tip: whenever you feel terribly old, just put this cap on… and you will feel immediately younger!

I shared a kayak together with Susanne. Never underestimate the surprising strength of women… we were not too bad, no, on the contrary, we were quite good and very fast! Susanne, we made a rEAl drEAm tEAm!

The view we had from the kayaks was quite different from the one we had during our tramp. The water was sparkling, the sun was shining, and the birds were flying over our heads. We could not see the tramp. The bush was so thick… we could only guess where it was… but sometimes we spotted a few bays we had walked on…that was nice.

After two hours kayaking we stopped at a beach where an aqua taxi picked us up and brought us back to Marahau again. It was the same taxi driver who gave us a lift to Tortaranui three days ago… so we spent a happy hour chatting with him und he gave us hot tips were to go the next day.

Before we left Marahau we stopped at a little museum… there was an exhibition outside – sculptures made out of wood and stone…yes there was heaps of wood… Susanne, Gregor and I ran about and got lost in this little yard…all of us took lots of pictures. It is astonishing how different they are… we love the little details. Thanks Susanne for inspiration!!

After one hour we headed towards Takaka, where we settled down at Annie’s Nirvana Lodge – a very nice place with a lovely backyard. Actually Takaka consists only of two roads, three at the most. It is nothing really special, except of a few tiny shops. I fell in love with these little creatures. They are lovely!

In the evening we went to the supermarket to buy a few snacks for the next day. When we were standing in the queue somebody tapped on my shoulder. And guess who it was!!! Sammy, a girl who had worked together with me for the RA Company before…I really like her… Actually she is from Liverpool and usually lives in Dublin. Now she and her boyfriend are travelling through New Zealand. And this evening they stayed in the same backpackers as we did. What a coincidence! We exchanged addresses at once! I hope to see her again…I had so much fun with her!

Abel Tasman Coast Track

Last Sunday I met Gregor again (See In the meantime…) and Susanne, who is German too and in New Zealand for one year. We decided to walk the Abel Tasman Coast track. Straight away the backpacks were packed. I put very little in it - only the most necessary things, like my toothbrush and a sleeping bag. On the next day we got up early, slipped on our hiking shoes (or trainers in my case), shouldered our rucksacks and caught the 8 o’clock ferry to Picton, South Island. It took us 3 hours to get there. While crossing the strait we could see hundreds of dolphins swimming beneath the ferry and the idyllic fjord landscape of the top of the South Island.

After we arrived in Picton we had Fish and Chips for lunch, what else? Then we headed by car towards Nelson, where we discussed and finally booked our three-day walk. The Abel Tasman Coast Track to be precise. This track is 51 km long and alleged to be one of the most beautiful in the country.

Around 6 o’clock in the evening we reached Marahau and settled the backpackers “The Barn”. A very cosy place! While we were having an excellent dinner together with a Japanese couple, Susanne was joking all the time. She is marvellous at telling jokes. I really had problems to swallow the noodles. I laughed so hard I almost pulled a muscle. The Japanese girl also complained about muscle pain in her cheeks which grew redder and redder.

After a very comfortable night (temporarily our last night sleeping in a bed) we got up early to take the aquataxi to Tortaranui. On the way, seals, comarans (no idea how it has to be spelled) and interesting Rock formations were shown to us, for example “the split apple” or the “kiwi rock”.

After we had been dropped off in Tortaranui, we met Neil, a passionate 70 year old rambler.

Due to the fact that he wanted to tramp the same route as we did, he joined us for the following three days.

Day one: Tortaranui – Separation Point – Awaroa Hut

To get to our first aim, the Separation Point, we had to pass through native bush. Here and there we could take brief glances at the beaches of golden sand lapped by gleaming blue green water. It immediately remembered us of the Barcadi advertisement where you can see beautiful sandy, Caribbean beaches.

I really tried to soak up the intense colours of the pristine seas and gorgeous inlets.

The bush looked exactly the way I have always imaged the jungle to be like.

Not far away from the separation point we had lunch. It was certainly one of the most beautiful places where I had ever had lunch. Unfortunately, we were attacked by sandflies as soon we had unpacked our food. Next time I will definitely bring generous amounts of sandfly repellent. Because now, a few days after the walk, the sandfly bites (maybe around 20) start to itch. Neil gave us a special recipe how to mix an effective insect repellent: 2/3 of baby oil and 1/3 of dettol. Next time I will use this miracle stuff!
While we were enjoying our meal we saw a few tourists approaching us. So we finished our lunch quickly, turned and fled. We did not want to meet other people. We just wanted to enjoy the nature. Winter is such a good time; the national parks are not too crowded.

Due to the fact that the Able Tasman area has huge tides (up to 6m difference between low and high tide) which have an impact on our walking, we had to hurry up. There was one section of our first day track, the Awaroa Estuary, which was tidal and with no high tide track around it.

Since I had only my trainers with me instead of hiking shoes and the high tide started to come in again, I had to take off my shoes and walk the last kilometre barefooted. Normally walking on the sandy beach seems to be very pleasant. But this was not pleasant at all. The bottom was entirely covered by millions of shells. After a while it felt like walking on razor blades. Additionally, at some places we had to walk through freezing cold water. Unbearably painful! But hey, I made it!

Afterwards we were rewarded by a hot cup of tea under a breath taking canopy of stars and the moon eclipse which was the highlight of the day!

Day two: Awaroa Hut – Anchorage Hut

After a wonderful night in a sleeping bag and a quick wash we were back on our way. On this day we even had to take off our trousers to get through an estuary. Absolutely refreshing! Furthermore, we had to cross a 47m long suspension bridge and dangerous tracks (see photo).

In one of my posts I have already mentioned that possums are not very popular in New Zealand. They were rather considered to be a plague. On this three-day hike I obtained evidence for that claim. After each 20 metres we came across a possum trap.

Day three: Anchorage Hut - Marahau

On our last day Neil was very funny. With his very fashionable hat on, he started to crawl on the bottom and behaving like superman. It’s unbelievable that such an old man can still walk like a 20 year old lad.

When we reached our destination (Marahau) we were welcomed friendly by his wife Edith.

After a hot shower we met the couple again for dinner and exchanged addresses…

After this trip I became aware of the things I really like and need. Life would only be half so nice without them: Chocolate, cheese, meat and rouge! Yes, ROUGE!!! The red powder you put on your cheeks to look healthier!

Come on guys; tell me your most essential things of life!

- When Kiwis are talking about tramping they normally mean bushwalking, hiking or trekking. ATTENTION! Don’t exchange it with the German expression ‘Trampen’ – travelling by getting lifts from passing vehicles without paying. Therefore we use the English verb ‘to hitch-hike’.

- The national symbol of New Zealand is the silver fan. It is called silver fan because the leaves are on one side covered with white powder – appearing silver. Does anyone know what it is for?

Hawke's Bay

Diese Woche war ich für drei Tage mit meinen „Mitbewohnern“ on tour. Und zwar mit der süßen Sophie, hier seht ihr sie wie sie sich am Strand von Napier rekelt;

mit ihrem kleingewachsenen Freund MJ, dessen Initialen für Michael Jackson stehen…das ist tatsächlich sein richtiger Name;

mit der verrückten Rachel, die die Tage leider nicht in all zu guter Stimmung war, da ihre Eltern nun für ein Jahr nach England ausgewandert sind;

und zu guter letzt noch mit der immer lachenden Ashlee, bei der ich leider Kommunikationsprobleme habe. Muss wohl an ihrem Dialekt liegen.

Und zwar starteten MJ, Rachel, Ashlee und ich am Montagnachmittag mit dem Bus zum Bahnhof. Dort gab’s gleich den ersten Zwischenstopp in einer Kneipe. Anschließend ging es mit dem Zug nach Palmerston North (an der Westküste). Übrigens der Sonnenuntergang während der Fahrt war traumhaft. In Palms angekommen, holte uns Sophie mit ihrem kleinen Ford ab. Nachdem das Gepäckverstaut und alle angeschnallt waren, ging es dann weiter nach Porangahau (Hawke’s Bay an der Ostküste). Unterwegs gab es einen kleinen Zwischenstopp at Sophie’s place. Dort schnorrten wir ein paar Cornflakes und bewunderten die Bilder ihrer Mutter, die hier eine bekannte Künstlerin ist. Außerdem stoppten wir wohl am kleinsten KFC

der Welt und kurz vor zehn marschierten wir noch in einem Supermarkt ein. Gegen 23 Uhr kamen wir dann im Ferienwohnhaus an. Es war dunkel, so konnte ich nicht allzu viel sehen, doch das Meer war nicht zu überhören. Nach nem Filmchen ging es dann zu Bett, doch war die Nacht nicht allzu angenehm, da es echt verdammt kalt war.

Meine Nase war am nächsten Morgen durchgefroren. Den anderen erging es genauso, sodass wir uns alle bei Sophie und MJ im Bett zum Gruppenkuscheln zusammen kneulten.

Danach gab es unter blauem Himmel Frühstücksflocken auf den Treppenstufen der Veranda. Gar nicht mal übel! Dabei wurden wir unter skeptischen Blicken von den Nachbarn begrüßt.

So verbrachten wir den Tag hauptsächlich mit Entspannen und mit dem Auto durch die Landschaft zu gurken, auf der Suche nach Empfang. Die scheinen echt Handysüchtig zu sein. Nun denn, ich hab die Chance genutzt Bilder zu machen.

Die Landschaft sieht aus, als ob sie mit einem grünen Teppich überzogen wäre. Doch außer Schafe und Kühe gab es da nicht allzu viel zusehen. Leider! Um ehrlich zu sein, fand ich die Landschaft zumeist ziemlich öde. Hier im Osten scheint es wenn, nur Hügel zu geben, ansonsten handelt es sich eher um Flachland. Nur was überhaupt nicht reinpasst in die Landschaft, sind die Palmen. Palmen neben einer Schafsherde, das beisst sich doch!!! Schade, dass ich kein Bild dazu hab...

Am späten Nachmittag konnte ich meine Flatmates dann überreden mit mir ne Runde Schwimmen zugehen. Und tatsächlich, sie waren Feuer und Flamme dafür. Das Lustige war, dass sie zum Teil ihre Bikinis oder Badehosen über die Leggins zogen… um sich angeblich vor der Kälte zu schützen…

Das Wasser war mehr als nur erfrischend und ich hatte so meine Hemmungen davor. Erst die Wellen, die gar nicht mal so klein waren und dann noch dieses Rauschen. Einfach nur gewaltig! Das hört sich jetzt vielleicht so an, als ob ich noch nie am Meer gewesen wäre, aber so laut habe ich es noch nie war genommen… lag wohl am Wellengang oder daran, dass es keine Bucht sondern ein ellenlanger Strand war…oder, was am Wahrscheinlichsten ist, man kann das Mittelmeer nun mal nicht mit dem Pazifik vergleichen ;-)
na ja, jedenfalls kann ich nun von mir behaupten, dass ich im Winter (August) in Neuseeland schwimmen war.

Am nächsten Tag fuhren wir nach Napier. Dort gab’s zu Mittag und nen kleine Stadtbummel. Außerdem waren wir in einem Opossumladen, wo es Opossumfell gab, was sonst?

Die Viecher scheint es hier wie Sand am Meer zu geben, denn auf den Landstraßen konnte man etliche sehen, die jedoch bedauerlicherweise genauso leblos waren wie in diesem Geschäft.

Gegen Nachmittag trafen wir Jessica eine weitere Mitbewohnerin. Und so ging es per Autokolonne zu ihr nachhause. Ein schönes Haus. Alles in weiß. Typisch Strandhäuser. Dort warteten wir Dip und Crisps naschend und Soaps und Sitcoms schauend auf das von Jessicas Mutter zubereitete Abendessen. Was übrigens sehr lecker war. Es gab auch diese süßen Kartoffeln (Kumra). Yummy!!

Und der Nachtisch! Der war der absolute Hammer. Dunkler Schokokuchen mit Schokopudding und Vanilleeis. Besser geht es nicht!

Am nächsten Morgen hieß es dann leider wieder Sachen packen und ab nach Taupo, wo MJ und ich den nächsten Bus zurück nach Wellington nahmen.

...wurde viel ausgegangen und neue Bekanntschaften gemacht, sowie Freundschaften geschlossen. So liefen Julia und ich eines Tages den zwei netten Herrn, John und Moses über den Weg. John ein ruhiger und sensibler Vegetarier und Moses ein durchgeknallter und lebensfroher Afrikaner. Sofort kristallisierten sich zwei Teams heraus: Die Vegies (Julia and John) und die Meatlovers (Moses and me)! Egal was wir unternahmen, ob Poolspielen oder Rockclimbing, es gab immer einen Wettkampf zwischen den beiden Teams. Und nun seid ihr dran. Wer gewann wohl die meisten Spiele? Seid ihr eher auf der Seite der Vegies oder der Meatlovers? Outet euch! Bevorzugt ihr eine knackige Karotte einem saftigen Stück Fleisch? Welche Nahrung gibt einem mehr Kraft?

Nun wieder zurück zu den News:

Neben diesen zwei Verrückten lernten wir mittlerweile auch die ganze Bandbreite unserer Arbeitskollegen kennen. Natürlich war auch mal ein Absacker mit ein paar von ihnen nach der Arbeit in der nächsten Kneipe drin.

Letzten Sonntag bekam ich besuch von Gregor, einem Kommilitonen aus Deutschland. Sein Blog ist übrigens rechts an der Seite verlinkt. Er ist für knapp 3 Monate als Backpacker in Neuseeland unterwegs, hat im Norden angefangen und hat sich nun praktisch bis zur Mitte, Wellington vorgehangelt. Nachdem ich ihm ein bisschen die Stadt gezeigt hatte, ging es dann zu der Bar/dem Restaurant Southern Cross. Der Name Southern Cross (Southcrux) bezieht sich auf ein Sternzeichen, das man hier auf der Südhalbkugel sehen kann und auch auf der Neuseeländischen Flagge abgebildet ist. Es besteht aus vier Hauptsternen. Soweit ich weiß, sind diese Sterne auch auf den Landesflaggen von Samoa und Australien.

Hier noch ein Bildchen von mir mit einem meiner Mitbewohner, Rueben. Ein regelmäßiger Kirchengänger, der weiß, wie man sich zum Ausgehen anzieht und stylish perfekt dazu tanzt. Es ist immer wieder beeindruckend was Kleidung bewirken kann… Irgendwann, hoffe ich, doch einmal ein Bild davon schießen zu können.

Oh mein Gott!! Nur mal so neben bei: Ich glaube ich habe gerade beim Veröffentlichen dieses Posts mein erstes Erdbeben erlebt. Puhh! Ich muss gleich mal jemanden fragen was das eben war. Jedenfalls hat mein Bett plötzlich total gewackelt, obwohl ich ganz ruhig darauf saß...uiuiui!

Jaja, jetzt bitte keinen Anfall kriegen!!! Ich weiß, dass ich mal wieder total viele Bilder bei diesem Post verwende, aber wer mich kennt, weiß, dass mir Entscheidungen oft sehr schwer fallen.

Letzten Sonntag, am fünften August, war das Wetter fantastisch, bis auf den Wind. Das wollte ich ausnutzen, und so machte ich mich auf den Weg, den nächst besten Berg zu besteigen um Wellington und die See einmal von oben zu sehen. Außerdem war ich neugierig, was wohl hinter dem Berg sich so tummeln mag. Hm, leider kam ich anfangs nicht sonderlich weit. Denn mein Weg endete vor einem Tunnel, der anscheinend direkt auf die andere Seite des Berges führt. Jedoch war es mir zu gefährlich dort durchzugehen, denn es ging eine Einbahnstraße hindurch und einen Fußgängerweg gab es auch nicht. Ich fragte ein paar Bauarbeiter nach einem Wanderpfad und wie es der Zufall so wollte, fuhr mich auch gleich einer der Jungs mit seinem kleinen Truck bis auf die Spitze des Mount Victoria. Während der Fahrt hatte ich mit seinem herumfliegenden Werkzeug zu kämpfen. Denn die Fahrt Bergaufwärts war doch sehr kurvig und er fuhr nicht gerade sehr langsam. Nun ja, es hat sich gelohnt, die Aussicht war fantastisch!!!! Ich war absolut überwältigt. Doch bitte überzeugt euch selbst. Schaut euch dir Bilder an. Sie das nicht wunderbar aus?

Ich hatte so meine Mühe, die Kamera still zu halten, denn der Wind war einfach umwerfend. Ich konnte kaum stehen bleiben und war nur am Rumschwanken. Letztendlich musste ich von der Spitze runter, denn der Sturm drohte mich runterzufegen. Hammer!!! Ich hätte gern mal gewusst, welch eine Windstärke da oben gewütet hat.

Mein Arbeitplatz

Es haben ja nun schon viele von euch nachgefragt, wo und was ich arbeite und wie es mir dort so ergeht.

Ich wollte eigentlich erst ein paar Bilder machen und dann einen Bericht schreiben. Doch ist das leider nicht erlaubt. What happens here, stays here! Das ist das Motto!

Deshalb streng vertraulich.

Ein bisschen was kann ich euch ja doch erzählen:

Ich arbeite in der RA Company (Restaurant Associates). Diese Company verfügt über drei Gebäude. Das Michael Fowler Centre, die Town Hall (zusammen auch Convention Centre genannt) und die TSB Bank Arena. Es sind ständig irgendwelche riesen Veranstaltungen hier. Diese Woche Freitag zum Beispiel, können wir auf einem Konzert von Bob Dylan in der TSB Arena bedienen. Ich bin total aufgeregt!!!

Samstags sind meistens irgendwelche Dinner. An meinem ersten Samstag zum Beispiel war das Gala Awards Dinner, oder so. Es ging jedenfalls um Architektur.

Und da hatten wir etwa um die 400 Gäste! Ich sag euch, die Tischdekoration war absolut umwerfend. Man sah eigentlich vor lauter Zeugs auf dem Tisch, den Tisch nicht mehr.

Letzten Samstag musste ich auf drei Events bedienen. Auf der Affordable Art Show, bei dem Creative New Zealand Dinner und auf einem Highschoolball. War alles ganz interessant und es sind auch immer andere Arbeitskollegen. Dieses Mal hat es richtig Spaß gemacht, obwohl ich 14 Stunden am Stück gearbeitet hab.
Es war von allem etwas dabei. Ich habe ganz gute Kunst sehen können, Maoritänze, sowie Gesänge(alle Achtung) und kreischende Teenager in schönen und verrückten Ballkleidern. So kann das Arbeiten echt zur spannenden Abwechslung werden.

Doch kann es auch sehr langweilig sein. Solche Events wollen nämlich gut vorbereitet sein und das heißt bei angenommen 400 Gästen, 400mal dasselbe tun…400 main knives, 400 entree knives, 400 main forks, 400 entree forks, 400 siteplates….and so on. Da hilft dann nur noch ans Geld zu denken!!!

Außerdem hab ich so meine Problemchen… bei diesen Dinner werden oft sehr schwere Porzellanteller verwendet und da ich nicht gerade die stärkste bin, musste ich mich beim Raustragen dieser Teller ganz schön zusammen reißen um sie nicht fallen zu lassen. Wenn die Tische nur einen Meter weiter weg gewesen wären, hätte ich die Teller fallen lassen. Ich musste bestimmt zehnmal raus und jeweils zwei Teller tragen. Trotz Tücher hab ich mir leider die Finger verbrannt, die übrigens gar nicht mehr aufhören wollten zu zittern. L @ Astrid: Respekt! Nun weiß ich warum du solche Arme oder besser gesagt solch eine Kraft hast, denn du brauchst sie ganz bestimmt!!

Ansonsten klappt es eigentlich ganz gut. Die Deutschen scheinen einen ziemlich guten Ruf zu haben, denn wir werden ständig in den höchsten Tönen gelobt. Und wisst ihr was fantastisch ist!!!??

Wir bekommen immer was zu Essen und zwar umsonst. Und ich muss sagen, es schmeckt gut! Mal schauen, vielleicht komm ich mit ein paar Kilo mehr nachhause ;-)

Keine Angst, bei der Rumlauferei bekomm ich eher stramme Beine.

Herwig ein Österreicher ist der Chef von der Company. Mit seinen witzigen Sprüchen kommt er ganz locker und cool rüber, doch hat er auch so seine Ansprüche. Schließlich ist dieser Laden, oder diese Catering Firma nicht umsonst der/ die beste der Stadt.

Unsere Arbeitskleidung ist schlicht. Sie ist komplett schwarz, also total unauffällig und gestern hab ich auch eine Accesscard bekommen. So hab ich zu allem Zutritt. Die scheinen hier großes Vertrauen in uns zu haben. Ich bin mal gespannt, wie sich das weiterhin so entwickelt.

Ich arbeite fast jeden Tag, außer sonntags. Und manchmal sogar zwei Schichten pro Tag.

Von der alten in die neue Wohnung

…von der „komfortablen“ in die etwas weniger komfortable Bude… von der Routine in die Party Wohngemeinschaft… ich sag nur: ab in die Höhle des Löwen!

Ja das hört sich jetzt vielleicht etwas übertrieben an, aber ich bin tierisch aufgeregt und werde mich wohl auf einiges gefasst machen müssen.

Hier der Blick aus meiner alten Wohnung im 9. Stock. Der unglücklich gezeichnete weiße Pfeil zeigt auf das Gebäude in dem sich meine neue Wohnung befindet. Also nur ein paar Häuser weiter!Und hier sind ein paar Bilder bezüglich der alten und der neuen Wohnung. Ach ja, auf einem der Bilder könnt ihr auch meinen nun ehemaligen Mitbewohner Ali sehen, bei einem schicken Glas Wein „Müller Thurgau“ ;-)

Dies ist das Wohnzimmer mit Küche. Schade dass Ali über keinerlei Bilder oder anderes Deko verfügt. Die Wohnung wirkt so leider sehr kahl...

Das war unser Zimmer. Klein aber fein! War nicht ganz einfach ein Bild davon zu machen... zugegebenermaßen, das Foto gibt nicht viel her, aber nun ja, es gibt auch nicht mehr zu sehen.

Tatatataaaaaaaaaaaaa…. Die neue Wohnung!!!

Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist es nicht ganz so ordentlich in der neuen Wohnung, was aber eigentlich auch nicht anders zu erwarten ist bei den ganzen Leuten die hier ein- und ausgehen. Denn obwohl ich nur mit zwei Jungs (Luke und Reuben) und einem Mädel (Sophie) ein Apartment teile, heißt das noch lange nicht, dass hier sonst keiner die Küche benutzt. Nein, es sind bestimmt an die zehn Leute, die sich hier wie zuhause fühlen. Egal wann ich die Wohnung betrete, sitzt da ne Horde Teenies beim Kaffeeklatsch,

was ne super Sache ist. Es ist immer was los und es scheint nie langweilig zu werden. Ich hoffe, ich werde sie bald zusammenpferchen um ein Foto von ihnen schießen zu können. Ich sag nur der Kleidungsstil von manchen, ist echt der Hammer!!!

Am Dienstag ist auch nicht all zu viel passiert. Wo hingegen am Mittwoch die Sache endlich ins Rollen kam.

Eigentlich wollten wir ja schon letztes Wochenende auf die Piste gehen, jedoch wurde es durch die Arbeit doch recht spät (2 Schichten = 10.00am – 02.00am) und Julia hatte Probleme mit ihrem Knie, sodass wir doch nicht aus waren. Gestern hingegen (sprich Mittwoch), wollten wir es endlich wissen. Ist das Wellingtoner Nachtleben wirklich so prickelnd wie alle behaupten? So machten wir uns auf zum Courtenay Place und zur Cuba Street, die „Partymeile“ von Wellington. Wir hatten zugegebenermaßen mehr erwartet. Es waren zwar viele Leute unterwegs, aber die Clubs waren größten Teils nur sperrlicht gefüllt.

Da gibt es eine ganz positive Sache an Neuseeland. Rauchen ist nur auf der Straße erlaubt. So konnte man ganz beruhigt durch die Clubs gehen und musste nicht immer Ausschau nach Zigarettenstummeln halten, die einen jeden Augenblick verbrennen könnten. Außerdem stinkt und müffelt man nicht so ekelhaft am nächsten Tag. Man riecht immer noch nach Parfüm und nicht nach Zigaretten. Ich oute mich. Ich bin absoluter Nichtraucher und hasse Zigaretten egal welcher Art!

…So nun aber weiter im Kontext. Wir waren in Clubs wie dem Establishment, dem Maya und nach vielen andren kamen wir dann endlich in einem Club an, in dem Lifemusik gespielt wurde. (Ich kann mich leider nicht mehr an den Namen erinnern) Dort kamen wir auch schnell mit Leuten ins Gespräch und konnten mit beruhigten Gewissen, unsere Englischkenntnisse trainiert zu haben, nachhause gehen. Nur mal so neben bei, egal wo man hinkommt…man hat immer das Gefühl das Englischstudium würde einen geradezu verfolgen. Kommilitonen wissen bescheid! ;-)

Die Clubs hier in Wellington sind ziemlich abwechslungsreich und anders. Das Gute ist, dass man keinen Eintritt bezahlen muss, sodass man praktisch á la Monkey Jump von einem Club zum nächsten springen kann und letztendlich dort bleibt wo es einem am Besten gefällt.

Es ist kaum zu glauben wie die Leute hier rumlaufen, bzw. ausgehen. Wie ihr selbst auf dem Temperaturangabe rechts sehen könnt, haben wir’s hier gerade mal um die 12 Grad warm/kalt und die Leute laufen hier in kurzen Hosen und T-shirts rum. Das ist der Hammer. Doch nicht nur das ist eigenartig, sondern auch die Art wie sie sich kleiden. Extravagant, ausgeflippt, geschmack- und fantasievoll, andere wiederum total zerfetzt und geschmacklos. Oder wie einer meiner neuen Mitbewohner demletzt noch über eine andere Mitbewohnerin sagte: You don’t dress up normal, but GOOD!!!

Auf Wohnungssuche

Da uns unser bisheriger Mitbewohner doch etwas zu langweilig erscheint, haben wir uns dazu entschlossen nach einer neuen Unterkunft zu suchen.
Und was uns dabei widerfahren ist, ist geradezu unglaublich. So etwas habe ich bisher annähernd nur in Filmen gesehen, wobei ich sagen muss die Realität ist noch viel krasser.

Zuerst besorgten wir uns ein paar Adressen über eine Art Studentenvermittlung. Die erste Station war ein Studentenwohnheim. Ein Typ namens David, zeigte uns auch gleich die ersten Zimmer. Und so bekamen wir unseren ersten Schock. Die Zimmer sahen aus, als ob darin eine wilde Party statt gefunden hätte. Bierdosen, Karten, Müllsäcke, Pizzaschachteln, Weinflaschen und stuff like that lagen verteilt über den Boden, sowie der Einrichtung. David meinte, dies sei ein gewöhnlicher Dauerzustand. Und nun glaubt bloß nicht, Julia und ich seien spießig. Denn das sah wirklich aus, als ob ne Bombe eingeschlagen hätte.

Doch der Brüller kommt erst noch. Nach weiteren drei Wohnungen, besuchten wir noch eine in der Cuba Street. Für alle die es nicht wissen, die Cuba Street ist bekannt für ihr reges Nachtleben. Im Cubabereich befinden sich unheimlich viele Cafés und Clubs. Also zum Ausgehen perfekt. Nur das Problem war, diese Wohnung erst einmal zu finden. Denn die scheinen es hier nicht so mit den Hausnummern zu haben. Irgendwann stießen wir auf einen jungen Mann, der ebenfalls in diesem Haus wohnte und uns herein ließ. Im Treppenhaus überraschte uns bereits ein scharfer Geruch und der Fahrstuhl war eigenartiger Weise mit Tesafilm beklebt. Im vierten Stock angekommen, klopften wir erst einmal an der falschen Tür. Der Boden klebte. An der richtigen Tür angekommen, öffnete uns ein junger Mann die Tür. Er sah beruhigend nett aus. Nur verflog dieser Eindruck, als wir den ersten Schritt in die Wohnung setzten. Links von mir lag ein riesen Müllberg, der mir fast bis zu den Schultern reichte, besetzt mit dem dementsprechenden Geruch. Er führte uns einen langen Gang entlang, auf dem wir einen flüchtigen Blick in ein dunkles Badezimmer werfen konnten. Am Ende des Ganges gelangten wir vermutlich in das Wohnzimmer kombiniert mit Küche und Essraum. Es war ein sehr großer Raum. Im Allgemeinen schien es sich um ein Fabrikgebäude zu handeln. Auf der Couch saßen drei andere Jungs. Sie hatten wohl alle eine schwere Nacht hinter sich. Der Kater war ihnen ins Gesicht geschrieben. Auf den Tischen häufte sich der Müll neben den Bongs und die Möbel waren total versifft.
Dann wurden wir in die zwei frei werdenden Schlafzimmer geführt. Das Zimmer hatte keine Tür. Es war durch Vorhänge und Teppiche abgetrennt durch den Rest und dahinter verbarg sich eine Unordnung, das glaubt ihr nicht. Das sah so urig aus. Man konnte gar nicht hineingehen so überfüllt und durcheinander war das. Kleiderberge über CD Ansammlungen, Pflanzen, Müll und Dreck und das Ganze versehen mit einem starken, wie soll ich sagen, Gras- und Räucherstäbchengeruch. Das nächste Zimmer war wiederum einfach durch einen Vorhang abgetrennt und dort sah es nicht besser, eher noch schlimmer aus.
Nach dem wir dankend ablehnten und noch auf eine Party am Freitag eingeladen wurden, bei der sie auflegen werden, Verliesen wir fluchtartig das Gebäude. Ich wünschte ich hätte Fotos machen können, denn so was kann sich kein Mensch vorstellen.
Nun wir haben uns für das erste Wohnheim entschieden, denn da gibt es noch zwei freie Zimmer, die ganz ansehnlich waren.

It is raining man…

Heute war ich die Stadt ein bisschen erkunden und ich muss sagen, ich bin beeindruckt. Die Kombination von Häusern ist ganz witzig, sowie die Verkehrshinweise.

Und man kann eindeutig erkennen, dass die Queen, bzw. England in bestimmten Bereichen Einfluss auf Neuseeland hat.

Ach ja mit dem verdammten Linksverkehr komm ich noch nicht so klar. Ich bin immer total verwirrt und unsicher wenn ich über die Straße gehen will.

Selbst die Ampeln sind eigenartig. Bei grün könnte man meinen, jemand würde mit einem Maschinengewehr auf einen zielen. Hört sich an wie in einem Trickfilm. Mittlerweile find ich es nur noch cool.

Und hier die „spektakulärsten Bilder des Tages“, wenn man das so sagen kann. Das Wetter lässt alles etwas trübe erscheinen.

Ab- und Anreise

Es ueberkommt einen schon ein mulmiges Gefuehl wenn man sich auf dem Weg zum Flughafen befindet, wissend, dass der Koffer gepackt und alle Unterlagen parat sind, ausser das Flugticket!!!! Doch dies bekam ich dann wie abgemacht am Frankfurter Flughafen kurz vor Abflug (danke Anika!!!)

So konnte ich ganz beruhigt einchecken und mich auf meine weite Reise begeben. Bei jedem Stop, ob Singapur, Sydney oder Wellington durfte ich jedes Mal die Uhr um mehrere Stunden umstellen. Ohne meine Uhr waere ich total aufgeschmissen, denn mein Zeitgefuehl ist definitiv floeten gegangen. Ich hoffe, das gibt sich in den naechsten Tagen wieder.

Uebrigens, hier links seht ihr den Flughafen in Singapur. War schon ziemlich beein-
druckend mit den ganzen Pflanzen und dem krassen Teppich.

Unterwegs sind schon eigenartige Dinge passiert, zum Beispiel wurde ich in Sydney auf Sprengstoff untersucht. Anscheinend sehe ich sehr verdaechtig aus. ;-)

Ebenfalls traf ich in Sydney auf Julia, eine Kommilitonin, mit der ich voraussischtlich die naechsten drei Monate in Wellington verbringen werde. Kurze Zeit darauf stiessen wir dann noch auf Tatjana, auch eine Mitstudentin, die in Wellington einen Freund hat. Der uns dann auch in Wellington am Flughafen abholte und Julia und mich in der Naehe unserer Wohnung absetzte. Nach einem, Kaffee und einer heissen Tasse Schokolade trafen wir auf unseren Vermieter ALI. Ein molliger Pakistani, beladen mit zwei Plastiktueten voller Doener. Waehrend er uns seine Wohnung zeigte und die riesen DOENER vorsetzte, wurde uns klar, dass dies ein sehr bescheidener, routinierter und absolut langweiliger Mensch ist. Sein Tagesablauf ist immer der gleiche: Aufstehen, Arbeiten, Essen und Fernsehen. OHJE!!!

Nach diesem Megaessen, das wir eigentlich har nicht gebraucht haetten, da man im Flugzeug geradezu gemaestet wurde, machten wir uns noch auf den Weg etwas zu Trinken zu kaufen. Uebrigens, da es hier Winter ist, wird es hier bereits um halb sechs dunkel und die Zeitverschiebung betraegt 10 Stunden. Die Temperatur liegt ungefaehr bei 14 Grad Celsius und Wellington hat nicht umsonst seinen Spitzmanem Windy Wellington.

Beim Einkauf musste ich feststellen, dass die Neuseelaender, auch Kiwis genannt, kein Kleingeld unter 10 Cent rausgeben. Der Verkaeufer wusste gar nicht was los war, als ich ihn mit erwartungsvollem Blick anschaute.

In der Wohnung wieder angekommen, versuchten wir uns muehsam wach zu halten, doch schliefen wir bereits total erschoepft um 21:00Uhr ein. Ein Jetlag kann einen einfach so ueberfallen. Anfangs dachte ich, ich haette den Flug und die Zeitumstelleung gut ueberstanden, aber nach wenigen Stunden kann das schon wieder ganz anders aussehen. So hat man staendig seine Tiefs.

Am naechsten Morgen machten wir uns dann auf den Weg zu unserem Arbeitsplatz. Zum Michael Fowler Centre mitten in der Stadt. Nachdem wir herzlichst empfangen wurden und einen Arbeitsvertrag aufgesetzt hatten, mussten wir auch schon weiter, wie zum Beispiel zur Bank, um weitere buerokratische Formalitaeten zu klaeren. Spaeter ging es mal wieder zum Einkaufen, wobei wir feststellen mussten, dass auch in deisem Land, fernab von Deutschland, uns deutsch vertraute Produkte verkauft werden. Wie zum Beispiel Werthers Echte und Philadelphia.

So das war es bezueglich der ersten zwei Tage in Wellington! Morgen folgt ein harter zweischichtiger Arbeitstag, Ich bin gespannt!!

So ihr Lieben,

nun kann es endlich losgehen. Für alle, die es noch nicht wissen und schon ewig auf die Bekanntgabe meines endgültigen Reiseziels gewartet haben: Ich fliege nach Neuseeland und zwar am 24. Juli! Neuseeland, das Land, das ich schon zu Schulzeiten besuchen wollte. (Wer nicht?!) Und nun zwei ein halb Jahre später ist es endlich so weit. Das 8-monatige Abenteuer kann beginnen und somit auch das hoffentlich regelmäßige Berichten auf dieser Seite. Ich werde mir alle Mühe geben, euch auf dem Laufenden zu halten. Wer Lust und Laune hat, kann ruhig einen Kommentar schreiben. Ich würde mich sehr freuen. Den größten Teil meines Auslandsaufenthaltes werde ich voraussichtlich in Wellington der Hauptstadt von NZ verbringen.

Nun denn, ich melde mich wieder sobald ich dort unten angekommen bin. Muss ja erst noch diesen verdammt langen Flug über Singapur und Sydney überstehen.
